Indiana Funds for Fighting Opioids

Progress is being made in the fight against opioid misuse, addiction, and overdoses. In addition to the recent opioid settlement, the Federal Government is stepping up to provide funds. Indiana will receive $1 million to train workers to deal with addiction, mental health, and pain management.

The State of Indiana also recently announced a $1.3 million fund for Naloxone distribution. Naloxone reverses the effects of opioids, and access to this agent was deemed necessary following a 33% increase in fatal overdoses in 2020. Individuals and organizations in Indiana who need access to Naloxone can contact Overdose Lifeline, Inc. There is also a Naloxone Finder for individuals outside of Indiana.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 47,000 lives were saved by Naloxone in 2017, without increasing opioid use. This statistic invalidates the concerns put forth by detractors of such programs. The medication is available as an injectable or as a nasal spray (Narcan), which is easier for a layperson to use in an emergency. However, a layperson should always additionally call 911 because Naloxone may wear off before the opioids, which could cause the individual to stop breathing again.

This medication’s success as a deterrent and a solution has led to co-prescription rules by Medicare and in several states. These rules mean that an individual would receive a Naloxone prescription when they receive an opioid prescription. Additionally, 46 states provide legal immunity (good samaritan laws) for individuals who seek overdose medical aid.
