An M.D. in Pain Management

People’s lives are positively impacted by proper pain management treatment. I have gone through two surgeries of my own, and I have relatives with chronic pain issues. My experiences were both good, but conditions such as back pain and fibromyalgia can be very difficult to treat.

Many people think of anesthesiologists purely as those who anesthetize patients during surgery. However, their expertise extends to chronic disease treatment, child delivery, and emergency care. Someone in this field has a wide range of tools at their disposal, which allows them to provide the right amount of sedation. Propofol is the primary tool used for general anesthesia in patients of all ages. However, analgesics such as an epidural can be used when targeted or regional pain relief is needed.

I have learned through work and academic experience that I would perform well in a medical field. My focus has narrowed to anesthesiology since taking two chemistry classes and learning I have a passion for the subject. The connection between these disciplines lies in the usage of chemicals and compounds and their interaction with human physiology. Mastering and finding ways to improve the ethicacy of pain management seems like a rewarding and valuable career. I can’t wait to explore it further.
